My Auntie Mary's Tapestry
My Auntie Mary's Tapestry
This beautiful tapestry, painstakingly done by my favorite aunt, my father's sister Mary, was bequeathed to me following her death on the day before Christmas 1938. It had hung in her home since she was a young girl, so by the time it got to me, it was somewhat the worse for wear. My parents kept it for me until after I married and had a home of my own. One day I decided to refurbish it, so I took it out of its frame (it's very fragile, over 100 years old), fashioned a new matt for it, out of burgundy-brown corduroy fabric, (a remnant of new cloth from a pair of pants I had sewn for son Rob), bought some gold leaf paint and repainted the frame. reassembled it, and then it hung in our home for many years, until Jeff said he liked it and needed a picture for his wall, (when he left home and moved into his own apartment). That's the story behind my Auntie Mary's Tapestry. Auntie Mary had her own tragic story; perhaps I'll share that with you sometime.

Can you see where the tapestry appears faded on the lower left hand side? That's because it was hanging on our bedroom wall directly above the baby's crib, where we had set up a crib tent and a steaming kettle for one of our little ones with a bad case of croup. The steam worked for the croup, but it didn't do the picture any good.
Thanks for the repost!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to hear more of your auntie's life. Her tapestry surely made sense, to me.
ReplyDeleteI think there's some other family that would like that too.
Even how it's destination has changed. You know, the heart-warming stuff.
