we're posting recipes now. yaay.

For the Blog:

Whoops! just got back from a cooking demo by our Activities Director, and she featured Choco Squigglies from Jean Pare's Company's Coming series (her specialty book on everything chocolate). These are fun to make and a delicious little treat.

Here's the recipe:

1 large egg
7/8 cup milk
1 cup flour
1/4 cup cocoa, sifted
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt

Cooking oil, for deep frying

Icing sugar for garnish

Beat egg in medium bowl, add next 7 ingredients. Beat until smooth. Pour batter into plastic squeeze bottle.
(Empty pancake syprup bottle works fine.) Measure cooking oil into electric fry pan to depth of 1 inch. Heat to 375.
Squeeze batter into hot oil making spiral or zigzag pattern within about 3 inch diameter area. Cook for about 2 minutes, turning once, until puffed and browned. Remove with slotted spoon to paper towel. Sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve warm. Makes about 12 squigglies.

YUM! This is sort of a mini-donut type of thing, with like one-enth of the calories. I would like to try it without the cocoa, and maybe put in some almond flavoring instead...maybe some nutmeg, but that, of course, would not belong in a chocolate cook book, would it? By the way, it also says not suitable for freezing, best eaten fresh.

Anybody wanna give it a try? Leland???? Have a rest from banana bread?

  3. Hey, Jeff, I don't know where your comment went to, did it self-destruct? Anyway, yes! I do remember the elephant ears! That was a delectable bakery, the couple that owned it were actually from Vienna and the stuff they did was so wonderful, they didn't stay in business for very long, however, I can't remember what the problem was, it certainly wasn't the quality of their baking. I sure missed that place when they closed up. I can't picture Mrs. Pylypow any more, but I remember she thought the sun rose and set on you, you were her prize pupil. Can't picture Karen's mom either, that was a tragedy. We took Karen with us one time on an Okanagan holiday, she was a nice girl.

  4. well, sometimes in moments of effuse i make long drawn comments about ancient history nobody could possibly be interested in, like my teachers in elementary and junior high, then an hour later i read said comment, it looks dumb, or haughty, and i delete it. you and the k-ster are the only ones that get emailed copies.
anyway...to flesh out your comment, i think mrs. pylypow kept that 3 panel pencil sketch i did of the skyline, from strathearn drive, that hung in the corner showcase for all of grade 8. she was a character. real chutzpah. reminds me a bit of that larger than life lady from church that taught us how to ballroom dance...well, waltz, foxtrot, and 'do the hustle'. marjorie something, i think.
and the elephant ears were a confection made with 2 heart shaped beignets...which are also the state donut of Louisiana. that very loose dough is called pate a choux, or choux paste,...done in a ball shape, and filled with whipped cream, they're called croquembouche. croquembouche glued together with sugar syrup into a tall conical tower is called a gateau st. honoire, a classical french wedding cake that guests take apart ball by ball. silly food trivia. if facebook had an application for that, i think i'd win.snore.

  6. yes, k, but i only delete myself. from what i've been told, he's only considering a bit of vacation. his cats are half block away, so i should be able to visit daily, and your neighbourhood there by the traintrack was SCARRY. hardidly har.

do you still have your babies on your birthday? birthday party with mommy would be cool...i don't think i ever did that with my mom...she was always about us...would have liked to have her throw one party for herself. maybe she did. maybe she remember better than me. she usually does.

  7. CELEBRATE MY OWN BIRTHDAY??Doubts....I don't think I ever did that in my whole life. There was never much fuss made about birthdays in my childhood family, my mother would make a special dinner, and always a "dumpling", which was a fruity suet pudding served with a spicy sauce, dearly loved by the whole family. I don't remember any presents....birthdays just weren't a priority, they came and they went, maybe an old Scottish custom?

  8. ya doesn't sound like it will be likely Uncle Dave will be going, he says Jess has said she would take him (and we all know how that is). ya i do have my kids, Lee is gone for the week to Edmonton for work. and yes it's true we lived in teh ghetto, but 90% of Edmonton is the ghetto :p. Most of the kids in our family got to go out for dinner on there birthdays, I dont think I had much of that though as my parents always were gone on my birthday since it was before tax season.
